India and Indonesia have significantly strengthened their strategic partnership by signing agreements covering defence cooperation, critical minerals and advanced technologies during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official visit to Jakarta. The visit marks an important step in India's efforts to deepen engagement with Southeast Asia under its Act East Policy.
One of the key outcomes of the meeting was Indonesia's decision to procure India's BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system and the Astra air-to-air missile, reflecting growing confidence in India's indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities. Officials from both countries described the agreements as an important boost to maritime security and regional stability across the Indo-Pacific.
The two nations also signed agreements aimed at strengthening cooperation in critical minerals, emerging technologies and supply-chain resilience. As global competition for strategic resources intensifies, both governments have emphasised the importance of building reliable partnerships to support future industrial growth.
Prime Minister Modi also received Indonesia's highest civilian honour, recognising his contribution to strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries. Officials said discussions covered trade, connectivity, defence, digital technology and regional security.
Foreign policy experts believe the agreements further reinforce India's position as an increasingly influential strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific while expanding defence exports under the "Make in India" initiative.
