The Union Home Minister says the large-scale plantation drive aims to restore the capital's ecological balance and strengthen environmental conservation.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday launched the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign in Delhi, setting a target of planting 70 lakh saplings across the national capital as part of a major environmental restoration initiative. The programme seeks to improve green cover while encouraging public participation in conservation efforts.

Speaking at the launch, Shah said the campaign would help restore Delhi's Ridge ecosystem, conserve soil and water resources, and improve the city's environmental health. He also stressed the importance of protecting the Ridge through stronger legal safeguards, describing it as a vital ecological asset for the capital.

The plantation drive forms part of a broader national initiative encouraging citizens to plant trees in honour of their mothers. Government agencies, educational institutions, resident welfare associations and volunteers are expected to participate throughout the monsoon season.

Environmental experts have welcomed the initiative, noting that expanding urban green spaces can help reduce heat island effects, improve air quality and enhance biodiversity. However, they also emphasised that long-term maintenance of newly planted trees will be essential for the programme's success.

Officials said the campaign will continue over the coming weeks with coordinated plantation drives across multiple districts of Delhi.
