The U.S. President expressed optimism at the NATO Summit after speaking separately with the Russian and Ukrainian leaders, while Kyiv continues to seek additional air defence support.

U.S. President Donald Trump said he believes the war in Ukraine could be resolved "hopefully soon" after holding separate conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the NATO Summit in Ankara.

Speaking alongside Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Trump described his discussion with Putin as "very good" and said it lasted for an extended period. He added that he spoke with Zelenskyy immediately afterward and expressed confidence that both leaders were interested in reaching an agreement to end the conflict.

Trump's comments come at a time when fighting remains intense. Ukraine has stepped up attacks on Russian energy infrastructure, while Russia has continued large-scale missile and drone strikes across Ukrainian cities. According to Ukrainian officials, dozens of civilians have been killed in recent attacks on Kyiv this month.

Zelenskyy is expected to hold further discussions with Trump during the summit, where Ukraine plans to request additional air defence systems to counter Russia's continued ballistic missile attacks. NATO members are also debating long-term military assistance and defence spending commitments.

While no formal peace framework has been announced, Trump's remarks have renewed international attention on diplomatic efforts to end Europe's largest conflict since the Second World War. Analysts caution that major differences remain between Moscow and Kyiv, but continued dialogue between the leaders could create new opportunities for negotiations.
