The Kremlin has confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump have agreed to hold another telephone conversation "in the near future" following a lengthy call over the weekend.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said both leaders agreed to remain in close contact as diplomatic efforts continue regarding the war in Ukraine. According to Russian officials, another discussion is expected after Trump's scheduled meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the NATO Summit.
Peskov rejected suggestions that Trump frequently changes his position on Ukraine, saying the U.S. President has maintained a consistent approach while remaining willing to hear Russia's perspective.
The renewed communication follows months of international efforts aimed at finding a diplomatic solution to the conflict, although fighting continues across several regions of Ukraine.
Foreign policy experts say continued dialogue between Washington and Moscow could reduce tensions and create opportunities for future negotiations. However, they also caution that substantial differences remain regarding territorial control, security guarantees and sanctions.
The upcoming discussions are expected to be closely watched by NATO allies, European governments and global financial markets because of their potential impact on international security.
