Microsoft Cuts Nearly 4,800 Jobs as AI Reshapes Workforce Strategy

The technology giant says the restructuring will help align resources with its long-term artificial intelligence ambitions while streamlining operations.

Microsoft has announced plans to eliminate approximately 4,800 jobs, representing around 2.1% of its global workforce, as the company accelerates investment in artificial intelligence while restructuring key business divisions.

The layoffs affect parts of Microsoft's commercial sales operations and Xbox division. Company executives said the move is intended to simplify organisational structures and redirect resources toward AI-driven products and cloud services.

In a message to employees, Microsoft's Chief People Officer Amy Coleman said artificial intelligence is changing how work is performed across the company, automating routine tasks while enabling employees to focus on more strategic responsibilities. She added that the workforce reduction is part of a broader organisational transformation rather than a response to declining demand.

Microsoft joins several major technology companies that have announced workforce reductions while increasing spending on AI infrastructure. Industry analysts estimate that global technology firms will collectively invest hundreds of billions of dollars this year in data centres, specialised chips and AI software development.

Despite the layoffs, Microsoft's long-term outlook remains focused on expanding AI capabilities across products including Azure, Microsoft 365 and enterprise software solutions. Analysts say the restructuring highlights how AI is reshaping not only technology products but also the way companies organise their workforce.
