Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a ceremonial welcome in Jakarta on Tuesday as he began the first leg of a three-nation diplomatic tour that will also take him to Australia and New Zealand. The visit reflects India's continued efforts to strengthen strategic partnerships and expand its influence across the Indo-Pacific region.

During his visit to Indonesia, Prime Minister Modi is expected to hold bilateral talks with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. Discussions are expected to focus on maritime security, trade, digital cooperation, defence collaboration and regional stability, with both countries seeking to enhance cooperation under India's Act East Policy.

Following the Indonesia visit, the Prime Minister will travel to Australia for high-level meetings with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese before concluding the tour in New Zealand, where he is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. The three-country visit is expected to reinforce India's diplomatic engagement with key partners across the Indo-Pacific.

Officials from India's Ministry of External Affairs have described the tour as part of New Delhi's broader strategy to deepen economic ties, strengthen supply-chain resilience and expand cooperation in areas including technology, clean energy and maritime connectivity. The visit also comes amid increasing geopolitical competition in the Indo-Pacific, making regional partnerships a key pillar of India's foreign policy.

Foreign policy analysts say the meetings will provide an opportunity for India and its regional partners to discuss common challenges ranging from economic security to freedom of navigation and sustainable development. The outcomes of the visit are expected to further strengthen India's position as an important strategic player in the Indo-Pacific region.
