Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup marked the final World Cup appearance of his illustrious career, bringing an end to a journey that has spanned more than two decades on football's biggest stage.

Portugal's campaign concluded after a narrow Round of 16 defeat to Spain, with a late goal ending their hopes of advancing further in the tournament. Speaking after the match, Ronaldo acknowledged the disappointment but urged calm before making any decisions regarding his future with the national team.

"I gave everything I had for Portugal," Ronaldo told reporters. "This was my last World Cup, but I don't want to make emotional decisions immediately after the match. I'll take time to reflect with my family before deciding what comes next."

The 41-year-old said Portugal's elimination should not overshadow the team's overall performance, describing the contest as one that could have gone either way. He praised his teammates for their commitment throughout the tournament despite the painful defeat.

Ronaldo also paid tribute to Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez, thanking him for his leadership and describing him as "a great manager and a great human being."

Widely regarded as one of football's greatest players, Ronaldo leaves the World Cup with one of the most remarkable international careers in history. He has represented Portugal across six World Cups, won the UEFA European Championship in 2016, lifted the UEFA Nations League twice, and became the country's all-time leading goalscorer.

Although his World Cup journey has come to an end, Ronaldo stopped short of confirming his retirement from international football, saying any final decision would come after careful reflection.

Portugal now begins preparing for a new era as questions grow over the future of one of the game's most iconic figures.
